Chapter 10: A Hacker Love Story Fights Again- The Mercy Appeal Begins

The mercy appeal was taking too long. Every day that passed was another day of attacks by Guru. Another day of economic chaos. Another day of innocent people suffering.

Habul could not wait any longer.

He had worked with the Task Force for the past few months. They had made progress. They had put an end to several of Guru’s operations and saved billions of money. But they still had not stopped him. Not completely. Not permanently. Guru was still out there, one step ahead of them, always learning and adapting.

He knows we are coming, Habul whispered to the chief of the Task Force. He knows I am helping you.

How do you know? The chief asked.

Because he is using techniques I taught him, Habul replied. He is testing me. See if I have lost my touch.

The chief was silent for a moment. Can you beat him?

I can. But I need your help. I need total access. I need to get inside his network and take him down from the inside.

This is too risky. If you get caught we won’t have anyone on the inside

If I don’t get caught, we will have stopped Guru. Habul met the chief’s eyes. I trained under him. I know his systems better than anyone. I can do this.

The chief reluctantly agreed. He gave Habul a secure room within the prison. A high-end computer. Total access to whatever resources the task force possessed. And complete freedom.

Habul worked for three days straight, his eyes never leaving the screen as he battled Guru for control of the network

I have found a weakness in his system, Habul said as he opened another window revealing a server that hadn’t been there before. A gap in the defenses that only he could see.

Habul was in. The Guru’s network was complex and intimidating. A series of security measures and misdirections that sought to overwhelm anyone trying to penetrate it

But the mastermind behind the system had no idea what hit him. He was well versed in every layer of protection and knew exactly where to look to find the weak link in the chain.

He moved from layer to layer. Stealthily. Silently. He bypassed firewalls and decrypted messages. He traced his path back to the source of the attack

He found the Guru

They stared at each other through the digital landscape. The Guru’s face appeared on the monitor. He looked older. More tired. But his eyes still held that same calculating gaze

My disciple, the Guru said. I wondered when you would come

You knew I would come

Of course. You were always so predictable. The Guru’s voice was colder than before, full of condescension. You think you can stop me? You think you have the strength?

I have the strength to do what is right

Right? The Guru laughed. There is no such thing. There is only power. And you have always been too weak to understand that.

You made me weak. You manipulated me. You used me and tossed me aside when you were done

I gave you everything. Purpose. Power. Revenge. Everything you wanted and more, and this is how you repay me?

Habul’s hands shook with rage

You gave me nothing. You gave me lies. You gave me false purpose. You took my parents from me.

The Guru’s expression shifted, just for a moment, before returning to its usual mask of control

Your parents were weak. Just like you. They couldn’t handle the truth. They couldn’t handle having power. So they died

Your parents died because you killed them. Habul spat. You are a monster

I am what the world made me. The Guru leaned forward, his face filling the screen. Now, I am going to be what the world remembers. The man who built this world. The man who destroyed it and made it something new from the ruins

You will not succeed. I will stop you.

You cannot stop me. I trained you. I know the moves you will make. I have anticipated everything you are going to do,

Habul smiled

That is where you are wrong

His fingers danced across the keys as he continued to type

The Guru’s eyes widened in horror as he watched the screens

What are you doing? The Guru demanded

This is the one thing you never taught me, Habul said as he continued his work. The one thing you never showed me

The Guru watched in confusion as the screens changed. The code he had written protecting his network began to unravel

You are trapping me, the Guru said in a shocked voice. You are not going to kill me

Killing you would not bring my parents back, Habul said. Killing you would not undo everything you have done. But stopping you. That is something I can do

I am sorry. The Guru’s face twisted in rage. I made you strong, and you have become weak

Strength without humanity is cruelty, Habul said. And cruelty is what made you the monster you are

The Guru’s network crashed around him. His systems failing one by one until he no longer had control over any of them

You will regret this. The Guru growled. You will regret choosing her and not me

I will never regret choosing love over revenge. Habul said as he pressed the final key. Goodbye Guru

The screen went dark

Habul sat back in his chair, his hands shaking. He had done it. He had stopped Guru

But the victory was short-lived. The Task Force chief ran into the room, his face one of surprise

We have him! We have the Guru! His network is down. His systems are crashing! You did it!

Habul nodded slowly. What happens now?

Now the world rebuilds itself around us

But Habul knew rebuilding would not be that simple. He knew Guru would find a way to survive even this. He just hoped he would be ready when the time came

Maia came to visit him the next day. She looked beautiful. Happy. The first real smile he had seen in a long time

You did it, she said. You stopped him

We stopped him, Habul replied. I couldn’t have done it without you

Maia pressed her hand to the glass. What happens now?

The mercy appeal is still in the works. The judge is still considering it, Habul replied. But I have hope. For the first time in a long time I have hope

Maia smiled at him. That is all that matters. That is all that matters now

Habul pressed his hand to the glass on his side. I love you, he whispered

I love you too

They sat like that for a while, their hands pressed against the glass, their hearts beating as one

The future was uncertain. The past was cruel. But for now, in this moment, they had each other. And that was all that mattered.
