The Things We Never Said: Unspoken Attraction Story

What Is Romantic Tension in Psychology?

The concept of romantic tension is not an official one in the field of psychology.

The state is generally associated with attraction between two or more people who are not yet emotionally or romantically involved.
For some it can bring a sense of excitement whereas in others it might create a degree of apprehension.

There is often a lack of clarity when it comes to what might happen next which can cause one to pay more attention than usual to everything the other person does and or says.

It is normal to notice more the things one might otherwise have not paid attention to but when a person spends too much time trying to decipher the exact nature of the other person’s feelings, confusion and uncertainty can arise.

A sense of tension may then start to develop, hence the name.

It is important to note that tension is not actually the same thing as love.

The latter is a deep emotional affection for someone that usually evolves over a period of time, a process that generally takes longer than the development of tension.

A simple way to differentiate between the two would be to note that attraction can create tension whereas affection can create love.

To be clear, tension and affection are not mutually exclusive, but they don’t always exist together either.

Tension can dissipate just as easily as it is created, especially if there is no reciprocal level of attraction, or if the circumstances preventing a relationship from forming change.
